Scope and Content

Please note that some of the objects in this collection are very large and may require extra time to download. It is strongly recomended that files be saved to the user's local system rather than attempting to open them from a web browser.

The Irish Dialect Archive (Cartlann na gCanúintí) was established in 1953 by Professor Tomás de Bhaldraithe, as part of the Department of Modern Irish at UCD. The Archive is a resource centre for Irish language lexical / dialect research and consists of card indices, manuscripts, computer-based data and two small libraries.

The Archive contains approximately 420,000 cards which are stored in boxes and categorised according to author. There are approximately 60 collections in all. Between 25 July 2006 and 03 October 2006, feasibility testing was undertaken for making the Card Collection available online. To this end, the Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive created a database and manually entered a selection of data from two of these collections: de Bhaldraithe and Laighléis. The resulting data is offered here 'as is' in comma delimited and XML formats.

Arrangement of the Collection

The database is arranged in three tables: a table containing the main entry, a table containing usage examples (relating to the main entry) and a table containing words associated with the main entry.

The database as a whole is maintained as a single digital object in four parts: one part for each table with a fourth part containing a combined version of all three tables (similar to a SQL left join). The data is available as both XML and comma delimited text files, except in the case of the joined data, which is available only as XML.
